Minute Book of the Llanfairpwll Women's Institute, 1915 [title page, image 1 of 7]

Description

These pages are taken from the first Minute Book of the Llanfairpwll Women's Institute (WI), which was the first branch of the WI to be established in Britain in 1915. The WI movement first originated in Canada and the Canadian connection was crucial to the establishment of the WI at Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll. At a conference held at Bangor in September 1915, Mrs Madge Watt of Canada, gave an inspiring talk on the objectives and achievements of the WI movement and outlined the contribution which the women of Wales could make to the war effort by organising themselves in a similar fashion. Colonel R. Stapleton-Cotton, chairman of the North Wales Agricultural Organization Society (AOS) and his wife, Jane Stapleton-Cotton of Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, were clearly very impressed with what they heard. A few days later, they called an open meeting in the village and invited Mrs Watt to attend. It was at this meeting that a decision was taken to form a branch of the WI in the area.
