Henry Michael Martin was born in Waterford in 1893, and moved with his family to Swansea when he was six weeks old. He served with the South Lancs Regiment from 1914 to 1919 (being discharged on 14 August 1919 having served for four years and 339 days). He lost a leg and a kidney in the Battle of the Somme.
