Elenora, [Edward] Howell and Caroline Williams of Ysgiach Ganol Farm, Felindre, Swansea chat to RDP Officer Vicki Thompson about visiting Carmarthen mart and the loneliness of farming

Description

[Edward] Howell: The joys of farming, you see young stock, you see the lambs born in the spring, you’ve got calves born in the spring and autumn, seeing them grow up, you know, you have got to get rid of them at a certain point, but it's just the joy of… the cattle market then in Carmarthen, you’re working with animals all the time. You know, it’s different with your own animals, you know how they work, and how they behave. When you’re in Carmarthen, it’s a challenge so you got other people's animals, and they handle totally different, you know, but it's a joy. I enjoyed every day, you know? Every day I go in and there is a challenge, yes.
Caroline: You get a lot of banter and you meet people.
[Edward] Howell: Oh yes…
Caroline: Because it's very lonely otherwise.
[Edward] Howell: It can be very lonely on the farm, because you know, you're there, just you and if radio’s working on the tractor, it's you and the radio, nobody else to talk to, only when you come in to have dinner or whatever. But sometimes I don't come in for dinner, do I? You know, just continue all day and yeah, it's great, you know? Let’s hope it continues.
Interviewer Vicki Thompson: And how about yourselves? What do you find really empowering about farming? What are the good things about farming?
Elenora: Nothing is the same everyday is like, you know? With the weather I get to work. That's what I found is that anyway…yes
[Edward] Howell:  Yes, it’s a challenge, isn’t it?
Elenora: There’s a variety.
Caroline: Yes, it’s definitely a challenge.
Elenora: You get there… haven't got the same work every day, you have a variety of work.
[Edward] Howell: Farming is seasonal work, as well …come spring this… that's when the busiest time is, ‘cause you got the lambs and the calves and stuff, and then summer then you got the harvest, autumn is virtually the quietest time of the year., winter then is all feeding and cleaning out, and…
Caroline: It’s a way of life, though, isn’t it?
[Edward] Howell: It is a way of life, yeah, and if the weather’s, you know, can be kind to you, it’s a lot easier on you, but if the weather is bad and that's when it depresses you, you know?...
Caroline: You either love it or you hate it. Um, you can't do it, if you don't love it.
[Edward] Howell: Everybody you speak to, yeah, there's nobody down and out about it you know, everybody's happy in what they’re doing.
Caroline: It’s lovely now that Carmarthen Mart’s back you open, isn't it?
Man: Reopened, yes.
Caroline: It's quite a community gathering there, and they've got a lovely canteen and things, because they've got new auctioneers working there now from England way, and they were absolutely amazed when they opened, what a family sort of orientated…, and how everybody knew everybody, and it's really just a social event. A lot of the older people come, isn't it, just to meet, and to just have dinner in the canteen which they missed that for a couple of years now, not only just Covid…
[Edward] Howell: Say like, we’ll just go down on a Wednesday and we’ll have here food now, so we’re right, you know? They’re there Friday as well, some of them but they’re still going, you know?
Caroline: But farming you don't do it for money, you do for love and you just don't get fed up of seeing your first lamb or your first calf, or watching, you know, the grass growing and the silage coming in, and like, yesterday I went to have a look for eggs, because the chickens are laying out, oh the smell of our hay… it's just…
[Edward] Howell: Takes your breath away, doesn’t it?
