Mile Barn Cottages, Wrexham
Description
Photos of Mile Barn Cottages, Holt Road, Wrexham. Taken November 2024. These cottages have stood here for around 200 years. A newspaper article in 1837 references an occupier of one of the cottages. It is thought that it was originally a barn and converted into one cottage and then made into two cottages. You can see on the photos that the roof dips in two places which may indicate the middle part was the original cottage. A small extension at the back was also added at some time which contained a bathroom for each cottage. Many entries on the census do not refer to no1 and no2 though there were two cottages shown on the 1861 census. Even up to the 1960s they were referred to as just Mile Barn Cottage. In the 1840 tithe the cottages and land were owned by Lord Kenyon. Documents dated 1789 from the Lord Kenyon estate make reference to Mile barn tenement. Up until the 1980s the cottages were surrounded by fields with a farm house across the road - Tyn Twll and Plas Goulbourne furher down. Mile Barn Road, which is close to the cottages, was named after the cottages. In World War 2 the cottages were just off Borras Airfield.
