Black and white photograph shows two young women in tennis whites walking towards the camera. On the left in a sweater and shorts is Heather Brewer and on the right in short skirt and cardigan is Jennifer Middleton. They are both carrying a tennis racket and a little handbags. The photo was taken at the Welsh Lawn Tennis Championships at Newport in 1954.
Heather Brewer represented Bermuda in the championships and had won the competition the previous year. Born in 1931 at Southport, she moved to Bermuda in 1937, ranked number 12 in the women’s world tennis rankings and is the only Bermudian tennis player to ever play at Wimbledon and reached the semi-finals of the French Open twice.
Unfortunately, we cannot find much information on Jennifer Middleton, other than she represented Great Britain. It appears that she split the title of the 1954 Championship with Sachiko Kamo, representing Japan [text from: (1) Facebook]
