Description
Letter from Edward Thomas to his wife, Helen Thomas. Archival reference: 424/1/1/1/1/157
LINCOLN COLLEGE
OXFORD
8.III.1900
My dearest Helen,
I am far too busy with
this nasty divinity to write. In fact
all I have been able to do besides - is to
find rooms for next term. I am to go out
& have been lucky enough to get small
& respectable rooms at the ridiculous figure
of 13/6 a week - less than when
I was at Cowley Road. Please tell Mother
this . The address is to be
17 Worcester Place .
It is very quiet, & Maine quite the
most congenial man in Oxford is to be in
the same house to look after me. None
but the friends will ever call on me ; for it
is somewhat far from Lincoln to
Worcester.
On Sunday I shall once more be
free to write & to work at History. It is a
delicious prospect , & meantime dearest pardon
my silence.
I have no news or coin , I am sorry
to say.
We had great fun hunting for
[new page]
rooms. I exploded at the sight of
an ugly girl with an elaborate sandy
head of hair who ran upstairs like a
crab & came down like a flying angel by
Botticelli. Maine thereat exploded , & the
girl joined in - we are not going there!
I haven't written a line for weeks, &
I am getting irritable. However, like Gallio
I must "care for none of these things."
Goodbye! Kiss Philip Mervyn for
me a hundred times & give my
lovely Father & Mother & Dorie & Julian etc.
Ever & wholly yours
Edwy.
Your own sweet little one, Adieu.
