Letter from Edward Thomas to his wife, Helen Thomas. Archival reference: 424/1/1/1/1/82
Do go to see Mother before you leave London. She will be glad to see you - haven't you been since I left?
I am not communicative, you see. They remarked in Hall tonight that I looked forlorn: and I didn't speak. So Goodbye sweetheart! In life your true and fondest friend Edward and you ever my own sweet little one my anemone maiden Helen.
Goodbye dearest.

My dearest Friend
Your letter this morning was a very great pleasure. It came alone; for of course nobody else notices me. But I was surprised to find you still at home, and annoyed that you were overworked and theatre going (which I very much detest). I suppose mainly your company man been very delightful, unless that creature Powis is still to your taste. Have you seen Janet? because I received a postcard from her enclosed in a
letter from Father, yesterday; to which I instantly replied; for it was an invitation to tea for Saturday last - perhaps you know.
I am fairly well and able to enjoy the rowing, but at this moment rather annoyed with things in general + filled with a great hatred of everybody. Everybody! yes; of course term begins today, and nearly all the men have arrived. But I didn't want to see any of them. My heart has no friends at Oxford, except perhaps MacAlister. Haynes and others regard me and I as a consequence regard them, have to regard them, as friends in mind, and not in heart.
We shall see. Of course my remark about "liking" me to a girl at a dance is quite valueless. -
Don't ever mention Haynes to Mary, please, whatever I say in letters. She is a great chatterbox like all women.
I am getting just a little work done, and hope to do more by resolutely leaving people to call on me, and not going myself to search out others. Davies is a - well! The Oxford word is too foul; - but he is useless.
Still time runs away from me, and I haven't written to Irene yet, several others.
Not Speaker proof yet.
