Jim Jones - British Army National Service 1960
Description
This is an audio recording of an interview with Mr James (Penrhyn) Jones, known as 'Jim' of Aberystwyth. Jim grew up in Bala, North Wales and after an apprenticeship, was one of the final men to be conscripted for service in the British Army. Unfortunately, Jim suffered a severe injury to his knee during basic training and was medically discharged after 7 weeks service. A semi-professional footballer prior to joining the Army, the injury he suffered ended a promising sporting career. His story offers a reminder of the hidden impact National Service could have on a young man's life.
