7. 1887 – Knighted by queen Victoria patron of the Pryce Jones Royal Welsh Warehouse

Description

Exhibition panel from the ‘Pryce Jones Legacy Exhibition’ originally held at Newtown Library in May 2026, on the life and legacy of Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones (1834-1920).

This panel describes how, after being knighted in 1887, Sir Pryce Pryce‑Jones became not only a celebrated businessman but also a major supporter of community life in Newtown. It explains that he and his family lived at Dolerw Hall, whose grounds hosted the first large sports and music festival the same year he received his knighthood. The panel highlights the creation of the Royal Welsh Warehouse Recreational Society, which provided sports facilities, a recreation hall, a library, and popular musical events. Over time, these gatherings grew into major annual festivals featuring bands, competitions, and large crowds, with activities ranging from cricket and football to cycling races. Overall, the panel shows Pryce‑Jones as a civic figure who used his success to foster recreation, culture, and community pride in Newtown.
