10. 1920 – Sir Pryce Jones’s family sell Pryce Jones Ltd

Description

Exhibition panel from the ‘Pryce Jones Legacy Exhibition’ originally held at Newtown Library in May 2026, on the life and legacy of Sir Pryce Pryce-Jones (1834-1920).

This panel explains the final chapter in the story of Pryce Jones and his company. It describes how, after Sir Pryce Pryce‑Jones turned 80 and his wife died, the business faced recession and the impact of the First World War. Following Sir Pryce’s death in 1920, and later the death of his eldest son, the remaining family directors chose to sell the company, first to Lewis’s of Liverpool and later to Great Universal Stores. The panel outlines how the Royal Welsh Warehouse continued as a major mail‑order centre under new ownership, with large teams of machinists and clerical staff, and how the business modernised over time—from manual order books to telephones, typewriters, and eventually computers. Overall, it shows how the enterprise evolved beyond the founding family while remaining an important part of Newtown’s industrial life.
