Stones of Mystery: Mapping the Megalithic and Carved Stone Heritage of Wales
Description
Stones of Mystery: Mapping the Megalithic and Carved Stone Heritage of Wales is a national digital heritage project bringing together 162 archaeological and historic sites spanning approximately fourteen thousand years of the Welsh landscape.
The project combines historical research with an interactive digital map containing GPS coordinates, Ordnance Survey references, site descriptions and images. Its four layers document major prehistoric monuments across Wales; the early Christian memorial stones associated with Carmarthenshire Museum; unexplained, anomalous and under-recorded carved stones; and a growing collection of additional sites identified through continuing research.
The accompanying illustrated document provides the historical and archaeological context behind the map and records both established monuments and sites where interpretation or identification remains uncertain. Claims, local reports and contested interpretations are clearly distinguished from confirmed archaeological evidence.
Together, the document and interactive map provide an accessible national framework through which the carved and monumental stone heritage of Wales can be explored geographically, historically and in the field.
