Audio Essay 001: Introduction

Description

Introduction is the first of four audio essays created as part of Botanical Colour: The Redpath Way, a community heritage project by Makepeace Studio CIC, led by artist Abi Makepeace with project support from Daisy Buckle. The audio essays are intended to be experienced alongside the accompanying publication, produced in an edition of 2,000 copies and first distributed as part of the Botanical Colour: The Redpath Way exhibition.

Combining newly written narration with oral history interviews, this audio essay introduces the lives and legacy of natural dye pioneers Margaret and David Redpath. Drawing on family memories and personal reflections, it features contributions from their children Katharine Rastall, Kevin Redpath, Tim Redpath, and Stephen Redpath, granddaughter Hana Wilde, and textile artist Bettina Becker.

The interviews were recorded during 2026 at Pencoed Farm Studio, Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire, at the Redpath family home in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, and online. Together with archival research, these recordings form part of a wider body of oral history documenting the Redpaths' lives, work, and enduring contribution to natural dyeing.
