Description

Edward Morland Lewis (1903-43) was primarily a landscape artist, who achieved some critical success during his lifetime. He was born in Carmarthen, the youngest son of Benjamin Archibald Lewis. His father was an accomplished artist, who exhibited widely. Morland was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Carmarthen, and afterwards attended Carmarthen School of Art. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1924. By 1926 the young artist was working as one of Walter Richard Sickert's assistants and it was this ageing artist who greatly influenced Lewis' early work. This study of three heads may be a study for 'The Bandstand', of which he painted several versions, and exhibited one in 1931. Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 30.5cm x 40.2cm.
