Tented Hospital, Mesopotamia, c.1917
Description
Margaret Walker Bevan was born in Swansea on 22 October 1883, trained as a nurse at Coventry and then worked at a hospital in Barnsley. In July 1915 she joined the Welsh Military Hospital, Netley (near Southampton), volunteering for overseas service. Soon afterwards the hospital staff were transferred as a complete unit to Deolali, India. Then in July 1917 the nursing staff were sent to Basra and Amara (in what was then Mesopotamia), and were stationed at different hospitals on the Persian Gulf. Margaret was at numbers 1 and 32 General Military Hospitals. Later she was sent to Bacuba (unknown location) where she nursed Armenians, and Greek Refugee women and children. This photograph of Margaret in a tented hospital was probably taken in Basra.
