The building which originally stood here was constructed in 1654 and was a "Bridewell", so called after the House of Correction built in Bridewell, London in 1556. The current building was constructed in 1775 and extended several times throughout the 19th Century, with the Pentonville block being added in 1866. The gaol was closed in 1916 and now serves as council offices, archives service and a museum. Entrance to the museum is through either of the archways and then across the other side of the courtyard.
