Britannia Inn, Wrexham Street, Mold.

Description

Britannia Inn, Wrexham Street.
The Britannia sign comprising trident and Union Flag shield was a common sight throughout the United Kingdom and at least five pubs bear that name in Flintshire although it is highly unlikely that anyone would contemplate calling a pub by this name today. The pub was lot 44 of the 1928 Sale by Auction of the St. Winefred's Brewery Company and was described as;
Freehold - Fully Licensed
together with
Large Yard and Outbuildings
also
Five Cottages adjoining
Mr Edward Williams is the tenant of the Inn. He has been in occupation nearly 18 years, and pays net annual rental of £15.
The property is two-storey, brick and slate, and brick and stone built, and the accommodation of the Licensed Premises includes:-
Ground Floor: Entrance Passage; Bar; Smoke Room; Snug and Kitchen.
First Floor: Landing and four bedrooms.
Basement: A brick paved Cellar.
Outside: A paved Yard, Urinal, Stores, Washhouse, two w.c.'s, and a large open Yard with cartway entrance from Glanrafon Road, 4-stall Stabling and two Pigstyes.
Gas and Water supplies are laid on.
The FIVE COTTAGES immediately adjoin and are Nos. 47, 49, 51, 53 and 55, Wrexham Street. They are let at inclusive rentals together amounting to £52 per annum.
Remarks:- This Property is situated in a working class area, and has the advantage of a large yard.
The 1870's was not a time women when frequented pubs but the Britannia like many others was run by a landlady, Mary G. Hughes, so can we assume that her husband worked in the many mines in the area?
The Britannia remains open today and no doubt the current landlord would be more than happy to pay an annual rental of £15 although I suspect they may also expect a greater rental return from the adjoining cottages.
The pub and the adjoining three cottages are listed buildings.
