Description

Roland Mathias (1915-2007) was a writer and critic who was born in Glyn Collwn (the site of the present reservoir at Talybont) and is buried in the picturesque country chapel at Aber. Mathias studied Modern History at Jesus College, Oxford, and then taught in England, returning to Wales to work as headmaster of Pembroke Dock School from 1948-1958. After a further eleven years teaching in England, Mathias returned to settle in Brecon in 1969. He served as Chair of the Welsh Arts Council Literature Committee for three years, and was Chair of the English section of Yr Academi Gymreig / The Welsh Academy from 1973-1978. Mathias published numerous poetry collections from 1942 onwards, as well as a volume of short stories and extensive historical and literary criticism prose. He was also an established editor, having founded Dock Leaves in 1949 (this later became Anglo-Welsh Review, and then New Welsh Review). His non-fiction work often focused on writing in English, in Wales, and his poetry was equally inspired by historical flavours, as well as philosophical themes such as morality and spirituality
