There was an older ringwork castle built by Gilbert de Clare on the banks of the River Ystwyth (called Castell Tan-y-Castell), but this castle was constructed on a new site by Llewelyn ab Iorweth during the early 13th Century. Today the whole castle is just a jumble of ruins. This Tower was part of the western Gatehouse.
