J. H. Williams unloads a wagon of slate, Llechwedd quarry, January 1955
Description
This photograph, taken by Geoff Charles, was part of a special feature published in 'Y Cymro', on 28 January 1955. The Llechwedd quarry at Blaenau Ffestiniog was the second largest quarry in the world, with over 25 miles of tunnels at a depth of up to 900 feet below ground. Slates were exported to five continents.
Each slate produced was marked by the quarryman with a nail, and a record was kept of each quarryman's production.
