Description

In this spot today stands a statue of British General Edmund Allenby (in the Allenby Gardens) who led the Egyptian Expeditionary Force during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign.

Evan Samuel Rees joined the army at 19 and served in the Middle East during the First World War. Medal no.1669, PTE E. S. Rees with the R.A.M.C (Royal Army Medical Corps). He survived the WW1 and returned to live at home in the Swansea area.

The note on the back reads:
“This is a ‘fountain’ in Beersheba. There was a German eagle on the top of it but the ??? was soon removed after we computed the place.”
