Benjamin Smart was born 15 April 1899 in Ysceifiog, Flintshire. He was the son of Robert Smart (Fox Inn, Ysceifiog) and Margaret (nee Davies). He was a private in the Welsh Regiment and was made a prisoner of war during his service. During his time as a prisoner of war he nearly died of dysentery, but ultimately survived the war and died 30 December 1971.
