Images of staff and patients at a Calais Typhoid Hospital during the First World War
Description
These photographs were taken by Dr Mary Elizabeth Eppynt Phillips, a doctor from Merthyr Cynog who ran the hospital with a colleague, Dr Hutchisons. Dr Phillips arrived at the hospital on Christmas Day 1914 and remained there until April 1915 when she left to take up a position with the 2nd Serbian Unit as senior physician at the Scottish Women's Hospital at Valjevo, Serbia. On the way to Serbia, the unit stopped in Malta, and there they looked after the British wounded before moving on to Serbia.
