Description

Commemorative tea cup decorated with handpainted roses, flowers and leaf garlands. Inscribed: 'Gott Strafe England' (May God punish England).

Purchased by David Evans in Germany at the end of the First World War. He was a student in Berlin in 1914. Having  failed to leave the country, he was interned at the Ruhleben Camp, where he was known as 'Dai Deutsch' until the end of the war. He purchased the cup as a souvenir prior to his repatriation. He later became Professor of German at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.
