Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort, embarked on an official tour of Wales in 1684, as lord President of the Marches. He was accompanied by the antiquary Thomas Dineley, who wrote an account of the progress and drew sketches along the way. This is the earliest visual record of the old house at Margam, which was demolished in the 18th century.
