USAAF memorial woods, Abergwyngregyn

Aerial view of the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Memorial Woods at Abergwyngregyn, near Bangor. The woods are clearly visible from the A55 dual cariageway that runs along the North Wales coast. The woods are in the shape of a giant cross with a smaller woods at its top representing the American eagle; unfortunately, I was flying too low for this to be clearly visible. The site commemorates the crew of a bomber aircraft that crashed during the Second World War. Photo taken 26 June 2005.

Unfortunately the explanation is incorrect. The trees were planted by Bangor University as experimental windbreaks using non-native species and were not intended as a memorial. There was a crash site on Moel Wnion above, but this was a RAF Blackburn Botha and all the crew survived (my uncle was part of the crew of another Botha who flew out to RAF Valley to collect them). The nearest USAAF crash site is further east along the coast above Llanfairfechan/Penmaenmawr, a B24 Liberator called 'Batchelors Baby'.
