Description

This tile was the gable end of the row of ridge tiles along the top of a Roman roof. The image protected the people and building and its contents below. The image represents a protective god, mythical monster or spirit. This example may represent a gorgon or the sun god Sol with his radiate hair. The sun was also worshiped as Apollo or Helios.

From Caerleon. About 1,850 years old.
