5 LLANGWM LADS DIE George Lewis Ordinary Seaman, Royal Navy. Serving on HMS Louvain, she was torpedoed by a German U boat on January 20th. George was 20 years old. Bertie Jenkins RN. Whilst serving on HMS Amphitrite, Bertie became ill with chronic bronchitis. He was discharged on February 14th 1918 and died at home on May 5th, aged 21. John Davies Rifleman, London Regiment. John died on June 1st at Bapaume, aged 36. William Joseph Bevan Private, Labour Corps. William was probably wounded in the Somme Valley and died on September 22nd aged 24. William John Jones Private, Hampshire Regiment. William was killed at Ypres on October 20th aged 22 years old. Monday 22nd April - " John Owens carpenter from Hook was coming home from the Dockyard. He was going down Llangwm Hill on his bike and a couple of boys from Haverfordwest coming down Furzy Hill and collided on Hook Bridge. John Owens was knocked down and died the next morning at 10.0 a.m. Buried Saturday. Tommy Childs' son of Pembroke Ferry died". Wednesday 16th October - "Digging out potatoes at Coedcanlas. A fair crop". "Armistice signed between the Allies and Germans on the 11th of November at 11.0 a.m." (G. Stephens' Diary) ON THE HOME FRONT 5th January - "Garry came home today over Sunday. We heard today Jack Hutchings is missing in France". POSTSCRIPT The Great War ended, and although there was relief at the end of the bloodshed, many families in Llangwm had lost a loved one, or those who returned were irrevocably changed. So joy was tinged with sadness.
