Barry Dock Police, Barry.
Description
A second style tunic belt buckle which was worn by police officers of the Barry Dock Police. Barry Docks. Dates from the period around 1889 / 1890.
The Barry Docks were opened in 1889 by David Davies and John Cory as an alternative to the congested and expensive Cardiff Docks to ship coal carried by rail from the South Wales Coalfield.
It had its own very small police force. On the rear of the buckle it is stamped with the number '2'.
The police officer with the number 2 at Barry Docks was Sergeant Guy Franks. It is possible that this was his uniform belt buckle.
The Barry Dock Police Force was formed at the same time and one of its original members was Pc Guy Franks joined on the 10th July 1889, the same week that the docks began trading. Guy Franks was promoted to sergeant on the 28th January 1895.
A photograph of Sergeant Franks in full uniform can be found on amongst my online collection The People Collection Wales
