Hospital
Description
Port Talbot and District General Hospital, built on land given by Arthur Pendarves Vivian and opened in March 1916 by Sir Sydney Byass. An earlier offer of a site presented by the Earl of Jersey at Aberavon sea front had been rejected as being too small. To raise the necessary monies, bazaars, boxing tournaments and other events were organized and meetings held with the employers and employees of local industries to secure their support. Sir Sydney Byass of the Mansel Tinplate Works and Sir Charles Wright of the Port Talbot Steel Works each donated a sum of not less than ᆪ1,000 for building and equipping the new hospital. Their employees also subscribed ᆪ1each. The final cost of the hospital was ᆪ3, 333.
