Description

Norman Tucker Collection comprises of a series of photographs of Ypres taken in 1913 and 1919 just after the cessation of the First World War, with a letter to Norman Tucker from his friend Pat Wainwright of Llewelyn Road, Colwyn Bay, written on the dorse; miscellaneous postcards and photographs arranged by place or subject, collected by Norman Tucker. Photographs with images of war-torn Ypres, used for writing paper as paper is scarce, bearing a letter: Pat Wainwright to Norman Tucker. -- Gives news that wife Heléne has given birth to a son who is to be christened Norman James Wainwright. Mentions a recent wage rise to £3.8s.10d. Then goes on to describe the content of the photographs [2 referred to not present]. Says they are genuine and that the lady in /1 and /4 is Heléne’s aunt. Concludes by asking Norman Tucker for information about Canada, where he understands wages are reputed to be better. - [Pat Wainwright was a military medal holder in the Royal Signals Regiment]. Pat Wainwright says that it was ‘sudden death if you showed yourself on the road’ during the War. CP149/1/4: Maison d’Arret, Ypres, with Heléne’s aunt. CP149/1/5: Ypres gas tank, used by the British as an observation post. Pat Wainwright writes that the ‘X’ marks ‘the famed “Hell fire corner”. All the shells that missed the gas tank fell on and about this corner, hence the “Hell fire corner”.’ CP149/1/6: Rue de Lille, Ypres, before the war, [1913]. ‘The X denotes the Cloth Hall as it stood in 1913-14’.
