Description

Tip Girls with sack cloths and Ashes, a painting by Thomas Henry Thomas c.1879. Tip girls helped to clear the drams of burning cinders from the furnaces, this work was carried out in all weathers. Other women and girls broke up limestone for the furnaces and carried loads, both at the works and in the mines. This work was demanding and was carried out in 12 hour shifts.
