Children playing in the street with the church in the background. The churchyard in the parish of Llangynwyd near Maesteg is reputed to be the largest private graveyard in the whole of Europe. The church burial records go back to the 18th Century. The church is dedicated to St Cynwyd a sixth century chirf, the son of Cynfelyn. All that remains of the original structure is a stone socket believed to have supportedof a wooden cross, which can be seen in the wall above the entrance. The church was rebuilt in the 13th century and has been restored several times. The square tower dates from the 15th century and was completely restored in 1893.
