The first ever overseas opponents
Description
The first team from the Club to play against an overseas team. The match, played on 23rd March 1983 was between the Club’s Youth team, strengthened by ‘one or two’ overaged players, and Victoria Park Secondary School, Toronto, Canada, with the visitors coming out on top by 10-9, in ‘an absorbing game which was in the balance until the last second’. Included in the home squad were a number of players who progressed to play regularly for the Club’s 1st XV, namely Gareth Jones, Gwyn Jackson, Mike O’Sullivan, Bobby Edwards, Huw Jones (named as Williams in the photograph), Phil Mars Jones, Emyr Tudor and Mark Peters. Mark would go on to be the Club’s captain for two seasons, in 1990-91 and 1991-92.
