Description
Letter written to Thomas Benbow Phillips by his brother, A Phillips, at Rio Grande do Sul, dated 24 August
A Phillips thanked his brother for the newspapers. He reported that sadly his little son Griffith had died on 10 August. The little boy had entered his parents' room, lit a match and set fire to his clothes. Fortunately his mother, who was in the next room, had been able to extinguish the fire without it burning him too badly. However, after a fit, he had died and was buried in the Protestant Cemetery. A Railway was about to be built, and there were thirty engineers ready to start work. The tent from Albano Pereira's circus had collapsed, but there were no injuries. A Philips inquired whether the “Norseman” would be travelling to Montevideo and would she have rope on board as the rope in Montevideo was not very good. He hoped his brother's family were in good health, and reported that his own family were better now, but missing their little boy.
