Description

Letter written to Captain Arthur Walter at Bar of Pelotas by Thomas Benbow Phillips at Rio Grande, dated 16 January 1874

Thomas Benbow Phillips told Captain Arthur Walter there was a bill enclosed with the letter noting he owed Captain Dunn the sum of £10-11-6¾. Thomas Benbow Phillips had credited Arthur Walter with the full amount of the Rio de Janeiro disbursments, which was £52-1-11¾. He noted it looked suspicious, because it was 15/2½ in excess of what he drew from John Moore & Co, and he mentioned that Arthur Walter had charged for articles in his book which were also charged in Hue's account. Thomas Benbow Phillips he expected Arthur Walter to be satisfied with the account, otherwise he would have to note details which would show several discrepancies in the account, the amount of his debt to Captain Dunn would be greater, and measures would be taken to enforce payment. A steamer was leaving Rio Grande on 18 January for Rio, and Thomas Benbow Phillips expected to wind up the affairs of the “Beautiful Star” and forward the papers and monies to England. No reclamations would then be allowed.
