Merthyr Tydfil Independent Labour Party Banner, 1920s

Description

This banner was made by R C Wallhead, the Member of Parliament for Merthyr Tydfil from 1922 until 1934. Wallhead was a self taught artist, painter and decorator.

The Independent Labour Party (ILP) was founded in 1893. Its aim was 'collective ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange.' The banner includes the name Keir Hardie, one of the founders of the ILP and a MP for Merthyr Tydfil. Other names included are socialist artist William Morris, socialist Jean Jaures and author of the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx.
