New Loyal Union Friendly Society Banner, 1820s
Description
This painted silk banner was made by George Tutill. Established on 1 September 1826, members of this Friendly Society paid a shilling a month into the funds. They could pay additional contributions to cover the costs of meals. They could also receive fines of sixpence for cursing, being indecent in dress, being rude, noisy or drunk and for divulging society business to non-members.
The most important event of the year was the "club feast ", which was held in Pen-y-bont every May.
In 1879 the society had 466 members and £1,928 in funds. The Society was dissolved in May 1885 and a branch of the Ancient Order of Foresters was formed in shortly afterwards.
