Letter sent from John Parry, master of the 'Duke of Rothesay', to W. H. Owen, 22 September 1864 [image 1 of 3]

Description

This letter was sent to W. H. Owen from John Parry, Captain of the 'Duke of Rothesay', from the Chincha Islands, 22 September 1864. Parry explains that he arrived at the Islands twenty-two days ago but that no guano has been loaded onto the ship yet. He is not sure when the loading will begin. There are many ships in the same situation, including vessels which arrived on the Islands some days before the 'Duke of Rothesay'. Captain Parry has offered the workers twenty dollars a day, but his offer was refused.
