Untitled study showing a group of people loading a coaster with limestone in Swansea Bay, by Allan Duncan, watercolour on paper, 19th century
Description
A watercolour sketch depicting a coaster being loaded with limestone in Swansea Bay. Limestone was quarried in the Mumbles and, until the construction of the Mumbles Railway in 1804, was carried across the bay to Swansea Docks in boats. It appears from this sketch that the boat has been grounded in order to be loaded, and the crew would have to wait for the next high tide before it could make its way across the bay.
