Regency style ball gown, oyster coloured silk satin, with embroidered bodice and beaded overskirt, early 1800s

Description

Empire line ballgown; a style popular at the beginning of the 19th century. This style arose from the neo-classical sensibilities which became prevalent from the late 18th century, up until around 1830. The line of these dresses echoed the draperies depicted on ancient Greek and Roman statues, gradually becoming more structured and less flowing, as this gown illustrates, as the 19th century progressed.
