Shako Plate worn by the Royal Monmouthshire Militia, 1852

Description

The "shako" was a tall cylindrical military hat, often decorated with a metal badge, the shako plate, and plumes. The plate would carry the regimental insignia. Whilst an impressive sight, the shako was cumbersome and heavy to wear, and fell out of favour as battledress during the mid 19th century.
