Welsh Costume: Catherine Williams, 1847

Description

Title: ‘Catherine Williams, A sketch from Nature, Festiniog, N.W., July 3 / [18]47’
Description: Front and back of woman with tall Welsh hat, goffered cap, neckerchief, shawl, dress and black apron. Was she as inn keeper?]
Note: North Wales Welsh hats were often straight sided (in contrast to the slightly conical shape of those found in the rest of Wales), but they were often shorter than is shown here. The proportions of the hat in the two views is significantly different; the back view probably being more accurate.
