Welsh Costume: Jane at the Goggerddan Arms, 1846
Description
Title: Jane at the Goggerddan Arms, Aberystwith, 1st ?June 1846
Description: She has a silk Welsh hat over a white cotton cap. A fringed black shawl covers much of her body, but it appears that she is wearing a blouse fastened to the neck. She has delicate shoes.
Note: Jane may have been one of the servants at the Gogerddan Arms, but no visitors mentioned that the servants there wore Welsh costume. However, this may represent her best costume worn to go to church or chapel and special events. This watercolour is very much in the style of the set of 13 watercolours and prints enTitled ‘Cambrian Costumes’ attributed to Augusta Hall of the mid 1830s.
