Welsh Costume: Woman with basket, cut-out
Description
Description: Woman with large basket on her back (known as a basged mawn (peat basket) or cawell in Welsh and creel elsewhere), although this one is unusual in having a lid. She is wearing a kerchief around her head, and another around her neck, a blue jacket and might have a whittle (a large woven cloth like a shawl), wrapped around her waist. She has a bold striped, rather short skirt, stockings and shoes.
Note: There is little to indicate that this is definitely Welsh and the lack of the hat suggests that it might not be. Women used these baskets around the coast of northern Britain and Scotland, as well as Wales during the 18th and 19th centuries. Other than the lack of hat, the costume could be Welsh.
