Note: This accompanied an article about the opening of St Benjamin Hall's new Welsh church at Abercarn (built 1853) which included the following: 'The native population (to the number of about a thousand, in their native costumes) with that intuitive propriety which characterises the Welsh people, had formed themselves in picturesque groups beneath and on each side of the church.' Sir Benjamin Hall was the husband of Augusta Hall (Lady Llanover) who provided Welsh costumes for her staff and tenants and occasionally wore Welsh costume herself.
