Welsh Costume: Pyne, Basket makers and coopers, 1824
Description
Title: [Basket makers and coopers], ‘London Pub by R. Ackermann 101 Strand 1824’ [p.] 85
Description: This is one of two images in the collection from William Henry Pyne’s Microcosm. There is nothing in this image to suggest that it is a Welsh subject: it does not include a single Welsh hat, nor are any of the women wearing ‘men’s’ hats, but one is wearing a blue hooded cloak.
Note: Many of Pyne’s sketches of people at work were published as examples of what could be added to landscape paintings.
Note: From William Henry Pyne’s Microcosm, 1822-1824, part 22, no. 85: Basket makers and coopers, 1.10.1823
Note in pencil on back of print: Abbey, Life in England, no. 180 (86) which refers to Pyne’s Microcosm.
