The 'Kildonian' was a ship of 650 tons, built in Glasgow in 1869, and owned by W. B. Jones of Swansea.

She was a lucky ship for Captain John Jones of 5 North Road, Aberaeron, when he commanded her in 1885. In this year, off Cape Horn, one of the stormiest places in the world, he went to the assistance of the crew of the 'Inchape Rock' whose master Captain Armour and four hands had been washed overboard. Jones and two of his crew took a boat in mountainous seas and boarded the 'Inchape Rock', and supplied replacements for nautical instruments which had been washed overboard. On their return to the 'Kildonan' their boat was nearly swept out of the water, but they made it. For this he was awarded a prize of £191.
