This painting shows the 'Liverpool' in a hurricane in the Indian Ocean.

The 'Liverpool' was a giant jute clipper, built to transport jute from Calcutta in India (jute is a fibre commonly used for making sacks, and is both very strong and resistant to flames).

She was launched in 1889, weighed 3,300 tons, was 333 feet long and could store 26,000 bales of jute. In 1902 she went ashore in fog on the rocky coast of Alderney in the Channel Islands and broke her back, being outward bound from Antwerp to San Franciso.
