Scripture Examination Certificate given to Sarah Rogers, Gwynnion Llethri.
Description
Certificate awarded for success in the Scripture Examination held at Carmel Independent Chapel arranged for United Sunday Schools in the area in 1904. (Sunday Schools were held in remote farms, in turn, to save children having to walk to the chapels for morning service, return home for Sunday dinner and back to Sunday School by 2 O clock and home for tea before ending the devotions at evening service at 6 O clock. At the farms, the wife of the family taught the children in the parlour while the adults studied in the big kitchen. The elders were usually invited to tea at the farm and left to go to the evening service at the chapel while the others went home to do the milking, before going on to chapel for the evening service. Quite a busy day, but so necessary after the week's hard work so that people could receive food for the soul and to worship God in spirit and in truth.
