Evan and Anne Davies of Cwmdu.
Description
The photograph shows my grand-parents, Evan and Anne Davies. Evan Davies was born in 1868 in Cwmdu, his family being millers at Gwastadau mill. Anne was born in 1868 also, at Rhydarwen, Cwmdu.
Evan and Anne would have attended the school in Cwmdu. They married in 1890, I think at Ebenezer Baptist Chapel in Llandeilo.
The 1891 census r ecords Evan, Anne and their first born child, Thomas Walters, living at Gwastadau. Evan is described as a miller and merchant.
By 1901, the mill was not in occupation, Evan and Anne had moved to Glandwr Bach, then to Pistyll Gwyn, Capel Isaac. Ten children were born to them.
Anne died in 1924 aged 56 at Pistyll Gwyn, and is buried in Talley. Evan died in 1954 aged 86, and is also buried at Talley, together with the eldest child, Thomas Walters, and Beryl the youngest, both accidental deaths.
Evan's obituary in the 'Carmarthen Journal' notes that he was a 'prominent agriculturist...an ardent Baptist...and Justice of the Peace. In his younger days he was a keen athlete and the first cyclist in his native locality to ride a penny-farthing'.
